The short version

1. Who we are and what this covers

FamHQ ("FamHQ," "we," "us") makes a family organization app for shared calendars, chores, lists, meals, recipes, trips, goals and household records. This policy covers:

If you run the open-source FamHQ software on your own hardware ("self-hosted"), we never receive your household's data. Section 12 explains how that works.

2. Information we collect

Account information

When you create an account we collect your name, email address and sign-in details. If you sign in with Google, we receive the basic profile information described in Section 3. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider, and we never see or store them.

Household content

This is what you and your family add to FamHQ: member profiles and colors, calendar events, chores and points, lists, meal plans, recipes, trips, goals, baby-tracker logs, notes and photos. Household content is visible to the members of your household. You decide what goes in it, and you're responsible for having permission to add information about the people in your household.

Billing information

Payments are processed by Stripe. We receive your subscription status, plan, billing email and the last four digits and brand of your card. We never receive or store full card numbers.

Location you provide

If you set a location for the weather widget, we store it and send its coordinates to our weather provider to fetch forecasts. If you search for places while planning a trip, we send your search text to Google Places. We don't track your device's location.

Technical and diagnostic information

Like most online services, our servers log IP addresses, browser type, timestamps and the requests made, to keep the service secure and working. When something breaks, we send an error report to our error-monitoring provider. Error reports are scrubbed of personal details before they leave your browser or our servers, and we don't use session recording.

Waitlist

If you join the waitlist on this website, we store your email address and the date you joined, with our hosting provider Cloudflare. We use it only to email you when FamHQ Hosted opens, and we don't share it. We delete the list once we've sent that email, or sooner if you ask.

Messages to us

If you email support, we keep that conversation so we can help you.

3. Google user data

FamHQ lets you use your Google account in two optional ways. Each one asks for its own permissions, and we request each permission only when you choose the feature that needs it.

Sign in with Google

If you choose "Continue with Google," Google shares the following with us:

Permission (scope)What we receiveWhy
openidA unique Google account identifierTo recognize you each time you sign in
emailYour email address and whether it's verifiedTo create your account and contact you about it
profileYour name and profile pictureTo fill in your FamHQ profile, which you can change

Google Calendar sync

If you turn on Google Calendar sync in Settings, we ask for these additional permissions:

What it lets FamHQ doWhy
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.calendarlist.readonly
See the list of calendars in your Google accountSo you can pick which calendars to sync. We don't sync any calendar you don't pick.
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/calendar.events
Read events on the calendars you pick, and create, update or delete eventsTo show your chosen Google events in the FamHQ calendar, and to let you manage them from FamHQ. When you create, edit or delete an event on a synced Google calendar in FamHQ, we make the same change in Google Calendar. If you turn on "Send FamHQ events to Google," we also add and update the events you create in FamHQ. We only change Google events when you ask us to, and only on calendars you picked.

From the calendars you pick, we store each event's title, time, time zone, location, description, recurrence and attendee response status, so they can appear alongside your family's other events. We also store the access tokens Google gives us, so sync can run in the background. Tokens are encrypted before they're saved.

How we use Google user data

If you use the optional AI assistant and ask it about your schedule, the relevant events, including synced Google events, are sent to our AI provider to answer that one request. They aren't used to train models. See Section 5.

Disconnecting Google

You can turn off Google Calendar sync at any time in Settings → Calendar. When you do, we revoke our access with Google, delete the stored tokens right away, and delete the Google events we imported. You can also remove FamHQ's access from your Google account at myaccount.google.com/permissions. If you do that, we'll delete the imported events on the next sync attempt. Events you created in FamHQ and sent to Google stay in your Google Calendar until you delete them there.

FamHQ's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

4. How we use information

We don't use your household content for advertising, and we don't build advertising profiles about you or your family.

5. AI features

AI features, like the assistant, meal suggestions and trip drafts, are optional. A household owner can turn them off, and the rest of FamHQ works the same without them.

When you use an AI feature on FamHQ Hosted, we send the text of your request, plus the household content needed to answer it (for example, this week's events or your recipe list), to our AI provider, Anthropic. Anthropic processes it to return a response. Under its commercial terms, Anthropic doesn't use this content to train its models. It may keep it for a limited time for safety and abuse monitoring. We don't use your content to train AI models either.

AI suggestions are drafts. You review them before anything is saved to your household.

6. How information is shared

We share information only in these situations:

We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

7. Service providers

8. Retention and deletion

9. Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live (for example, California, the EU or the UK), you may have further rights: to know what we hold about you, to object to or restrict processing, and to complain to a data-protection authority. We honor these requests for everyone, wherever you live. Email [email protected] and we'll respond within 30 days. We won't treat you differently for using your rights.

Where the GDPR applies, we process your information to perform our contract with you (running FamHQ), for our legitimate interests in keeping the service secure and working, to meet legal obligations, and with your consent for optional connections like Google Calendar and AI features.

10. Children

FamHQ accounts are created and managed by adults. Parents and guardians can add profiles for their children, such as chore charts, events and baby-tracker logs, and they control that information. Children don't create their own FamHQ accounts, and we don't knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. A parent or guardian can review or delete a child's information at any time in the app, or by contacting us.

11. Security

All data sent to and from FamHQ is encrypted in transit with TLS. Our database and photo storage are encrypted at rest, and Google access tokens are also encrypted by our application before they're stored. Each household's data is kept separate from every other household's. Access to production systems is limited to the people who need it to run the service. No system is perfectly secure, so if we learn of a breach that affects your information, we'll notify you as the law requires.

12. Self-hosted FamHQ

If you run FamHQ on your own hardware, the person operating that installation controls the data, and we don't receive it. The self-hosted software doesn't send telemetry, analytics or error reports to us. If an operator connects outside services, like a cloud AI provider, a Google Places key, calendar feeds or email, the data those features need goes directly to those services under their own policies. The operator is responsible for security, backups and updates on their installation.

13. This website and cookies

This website doesn't use advertising or analytics cookies, and it doesn't track you across other sites. It's hosted on Cloudflare, which keeps standard request logs, and it loads fonts from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address when the fonts load.

The FamHQ app uses a small number of essential cookies and browser storage to keep you signed in, remember your chosen profile and theme, and let the app work offline. We don't use them for advertising.

14. International transfers

FamHQ is run from the United States, and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. When we transfer personal information from the EU, UK or Switzerland, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

15. Changes to this policy

If we make a significant change, we'll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect, and we'll update the date at the top. We'll never use data we already hold in a materially different way without asking you first.
